What happens in a free career counselling session for freshers: what we discuss, how to prepare, questions to bring, what honest counselling looks like and the next steps.
Choosing a direction after college can feel confusing. Friends give different advice, social media shows only success stories, and job posts ask for skills you are not sure you have. A career counselling session gives you a chance to talk it through with someone experienced who has no reason to push you in the wrong direction. This guide explains what to expect, so you can get the most from your session.
What is a career counselling session?
It is a conversation, not an exam. You share your background and goals, and the counsellor helps you see your options, the skills needed and a realistic plan. At SamkhyaAcademy this is our free career discovery session. There is no obligation to join any program, and you do not need to have everything figured out before you attend.
Who is it for?
- Final-year students and recent graduates unsure of their next step.
- Freshers who have applied widely but are not getting responses.
- People from non-IT backgrounds considering a move into tech.
- Working professionals thinking of changing roles or learning new skills.
- Parents who want to understand options for their children.
What we usually talk about
- Your education, interests and what you enjoy doing.
- Where you are now: studying, job hunting, working or switching.
- The roles that could fit you in software, AI, testing, digital marketing and related fields.
- The skills and projects that would make you ready for those roles.
- A suggested learning path, and a realistic idea of the time and effort.
- Your questions about resumes, interviews and the job market.
How to prepare
- Write down your degree, marks, skills and any projects or internships.
- Think about two or three roles that interest you, even if you are unsure.
- Bring your resume if you have one, even if it is rough.
- List your questions in advance so you do not forget them.
- Be honest about your time, budget, location and concerns. A good plan has to fit your real life.
Good questions to ask
- Which role suits my background and personality best?
- What should I learn first, and in what order?
- How can I show my skills when I have no work experience?
- What would a realistic plan for the next six months look like?
- What mistakes do freshers commonly make in the job search?
- How do I know if a course or training program is worth my money?
Example: how a session can change the plan
Consider a B.Com graduate who feels stuck because she believes she cannot enter tech. In the session she mentions that she enjoys Excel, likes finding errors in reports, and is comfortable talking to clients. The counsellor points to roles like business analyst, data analyst and software testing, and suggests starting with SQL and a small reporting project. She leaves with a three-month learning plan instead of a vague worry. Not every session has such a clear outcome, but a clear next step is a realistic goal.
What honest counselling looks like
- It listens first and recommends after.
- It explains the effort and uncertainty involved.
- It does not promise jobs, salaries or shortcuts.
- It says "this may not be right for you" when that is true.
- It gives you time to think and does not pressure you to pay right away.
What you should not expect
A counsellor cannot choose your career for you or guarantee a result. They can give clarity, information and a plan; the effort and decisions are yours. If anyone promises a guaranteed job after a short conversation, be careful.
After the session
You will leave with a clearer direction and a few next steps. Pick one of them and begin within a week, before the energy fades. Write down your plan, share it with someone who can keep you accountable, and review your progress after a month. If your situation changes, you are welcome to come back for another conversation.
